Hi guys,

Here is a transcript of a very informative irc chat with Chris Leonard
(cjl) who is handling the translation of IIAB into 37 languages.  This
is from the irc channel #sgvhak on irc.freenode.net (which I hope some
of you join)

I'll create a new task on github to get things ready for the
translations according to Chris' direction.

dock9 cjl, I know Adam is very interested in Spanish, French, and
Haitian creole for the Haiti deployment scheduled for last August. Is
there a way to prioritize those languages and use them to work out the
bugs in our pots file?
dock9 I'd hate for us to be doing something wrong when 37 translators
work on it.

cjl You can start with en_GB (completed)
cjl of en or en_US, also completed.
cjl Spanish we will get quickly, most likely.
cjl Haitian Kreyol, is a stretch, we don't have a solid and constant
volunteer presence, btu Adam has the best chance of anyone of us in
recruiting them.
cjl As for structuring repo, please create top level dir called /po
cjl POT and Po files go in there.
cjl We can work on a direct commit hookup from our Pootle server at
some point, I give you the SSH key of a proxy user called 'pootle",
our lang admins can "borrow" that credential (only in their language),
to clickc a commit directly from Poolte UI.
cjl It will only write the Po file.
cjl That is the most automated set up for Poolte, we use it to commit
to gitorious, github and SVN
cjl Also set up a local copy fo the repo on Poolte so it can
recaculate the POT as needed (nightly by cron job).
cjl dock9: BTW, we host a total of 145 lang projects, so more can be
added at any point.
cjl 37 was jsut based on which wikis you ship
cjl dock9: I twaeked the POT slightly from getting it in a mail
messsage body, fixed some line-wraps,
cjl No worries, if we change the POT, Poolte merge will fuzzy-match
any similar strings and preserve any exact matches, no loss of work
likely at all.

cjl Poolte is the real deal, an industrial strength FOSS i18n/L10n
tool. Mozilla and LirbeOffice both use it.
cjl And it is spelled Pootle, but I always transpose the letters :-)
cjl dock9: You should talk to Gonzalo Odiard about his custom off-line
wiki grabs, he may have some langs you don't.
cjl At Sugar Labs / OLPC, we end up on the bleeding edge of new langs.
We often have to create the glibc locales to use them.
cjl Aymara, Quechua, etc.

like Huastec (Tének) of Mexico
cjl I'm slamming it with about 50 tabs open, but Pootle si not the
fastest web-app in the world

distribution key to github to grant it write access, is that the way
to go?
dock9 we will create a po/ directory and work with the en_GB
translation first to get things rolling.
cjl Yes, that is how we translate the Glucose (core) project of Sugar
(on github).
dock9 I don't think any of us are particularly experienced in i18n so
we may need to lean on you a bit here and there.

cjl run msgfmt on the Po files (to check for format errors), let me
know of any, I'll fix them.
dock9 where does the original .pot file live in the sugar/po? I don't
see it in /po, but I see POTFILES.in. Does that generate them on the fly?
cjl I showed you an example download link in an e-mail
cjl Sugar is a little different. Gitorious shows it more clearly.
cjl has to do with build method, I think.
cjl We generate POT and it goes into a special language project called
"Templates"
cjl From Templates, I jsut add langs and Pootle initializes them with
language team, etc.

cjl Ultimately, Poolte takes over the /po directory and no one else
needs to touch it.
cjl if you use intltool, it may look more like sugar, most of our
activities build with bundlebuilder scripts we use.

cjl I thought you'd be happy to have a few completed Po files to play
with in the meantime, so en, en_US and en_GB are done.

native speakers.

second to last letter).

dock9 On our team Yoshio and Omwah(James) have been handling most of
the translation groundwork, so you may be hearing from them.
cjl I'll need to create accounts for them on Poolte.
cjl We used to have self-service, but forum spamming robots figured
out how to register (and ACTIVATE) accounts
